My art is an extension of my spirituality, memories, and emotions. It is a very personal, meditative experience, enabling me to explore and express my Buddhist beliefs through abstract colors and shapes. The main theme of my works is nature, which I use to express emotions or the unseen energy, dynamics, and thoughts of living things. Most of my works incorporate shapes and landscapes
that are borne from my imagination. I’ve taken the abstract yet material forces of 지(Ji), 수(Su), 화(Hwa), 풍(Poong),공(Gong)- the five fundamental elements of all creation- and harmonized them with conceptual images to express life in its colorful, vibrant scheme.
Currently, my artwork houses four rooms. The first room holds the magnificent elementally Korean trees and mountains that I hold near and dear to my heart. The second room is filled with colors and shapes detached from reality, abstract. The third room nurtures nature, growing flowers and all things green. And lastly, the fourth room is the Mandala’s- the universe. One can say that my focal pursuit is to fill each unique room with reflections of the seasonal waves, changes in the environment, and shifts within my spirit.
Bo Song (1968-) began her artistic journey in 2012 while living in Michigan. Painting had previously been a hobby of hers, but the opportunity to pursue a BA in Studio Art from Oakland University in Rochester, MI and graduate studies at Hongik Graduate Art School and Dankook Graduate Art School have enabled her to turn her hobby into a profession. Working primarily in oil on canvas, Song’s spirituality, memories, and emotions inspire her creativity, using intuition and spontaneity to create shapes and landscapes that are borne from her imagination. She also incorporates core aspects of Buddhism, such as karma, Zen, and the mandala, in her work to depict the natural order and the workings of the universe. She also incorporates circles and spheres into her works, signifying the interconnections of the past and present. She uses bright colors to depict the ever-changing beauty of life. Song’s work has been featured in exhibitions all over the world, including Korea, France, Italy, Japan, and the United States and has been published in numerous books and magazines. She also received awards for her works in 2019 and 2020. Bo Song currently lives and works in Unjung-dong, Korea.
